Erosion of the Meghna
B. Barla Correspondent,
31 March:
Erosion by the river Meghna has rendered thousands of people homeless in three thanas of Brahmanbaria district. The worst affected villages are in Nabinagar, Bancharampur and Nasirnagar thanas.
Vast tracts of cultivable land, houses, educational institutions, mosques and temples in these areas have been washed away by the eroding river rendering thousands of people homeless.
Many families have left their homes and shifted to safer places. Erosion by the river Meghna continues throughout the year. With the onset of the monsoons, it takes a devastating turn.
People living near river banks have to bear the brunt of the erosion. The government should take up a scheme to protect some of the areas from the greedy clutches of the River Meghna.
